HUTTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Type: Educational
Client: Spokane Public Schools
Location: Spokane, Washington
Initially built in 1921, Hutton Elementary School expanded in 1941 and 1949. The school is located within a historic neighborhood featuring curved streets, triangle parks, and sweeping views of the building. MMEC developed a design that thoroughly updated the 1921 Spanish Colonial Revival-style building and replaced the 1949 addition with a two-story addition. The existing architectural character of the “school on the hill” was preserved, and the addition responded by complementing the robust design of the 1921 building and historic neighborhood. The resulting 63,000 SF learning environment incorporates daylighting, technology, sustainability, and flexibility for over 600 students.
